Tuesday, June 17th, 2008Double Victory for Veilleux at Nature Valley Grand Prix
Tuesday, June 17th, 2008
Second year pro David Veilleux, 20, showed the seasoned riders of the peloton exactly why they can get used to chasing his back wheel after snatching a double victory at the Nature Valley Grand Prix in Minnesota. Veilleux (CAN), one of the youngest members of the Kelly Benefit Strategies/Medifast pro cycling team, took the Nature Valley Grand Prix’s Best! Young Rider Jersey at the Minneapolis Downtown Classic and then the stage six win in Stillwater Sunday. Stillwater is arguably the most brutal stage of any race in North America today.
Veilleux came from behind with a surprise sprint to pass Rory Sutherland (Healthnet-Maxxis), the overall winner, and Ricardo Escuela (Successful Living) after consistent attempts by Veilleux, Dan Bowman and Andrew Bajadali (including a solo attack 300 meters out) failed to deliver the winning breakaway.
i ride inside
Tuesday, June 17th, 2008o I’ve been and admirer of RAAM for a few decades. Could I ever Race Across America? I know I can ride it – but race? So I’ve been challenging myself; ride an indoor century every 4 weeks all winter, and start up in spring with weekly centuries. But the thought of riding indoors for 5 hours straight is a little daunting. So I took Carl’s advise and got a Rock N Roll. Because the Rock N Roll has side to side motion without the instability of rollers my knees, elbows and shoulders did not fatigue like they do on a stationary trainer. Because I could get out of the saddle, take the “hill” (in my mind) I was entertained by intervals. Because I had the power computer installed on my bike I could measure watts. It was a great winter indoors – and now I am ready to ride outdoors. Strong. Thanks Kinetic
Trainer Tip
Tuesday, June 17th, 2008When moving from outdoor to indoor riding, be sure to clean your rear tire before installing your bike on your Kurt Kinetic trainer. Your tire may have picked up road debris such as asphalt, glass or small rocks. These small chunks of your outdoor ride may cause pitting on your trainer’s roller – and remember; that roller has an RPM of 3,000 – at that high a rotation pitting will happen quickly. Once the roller is pitted, the possibility of damaging your tire (cutting and then shredding) increases.
The simple solution is just to clean the rear tire with a shop rag – water if necessary.

You can pedal but you can’t hide
Tuesday, June 17th, 2008You may think you can blend in or hide in the crowd at a bike race. But a trainer-head sticks out sharper than a fair-weather rider on the first climb of the year. Believe me, among the power bar companies hawking samples, crazy fans up lampposts and a hefty percentage of locals wondering just what the hell they’re watching, we see you. Maybe it’s the look of long winters fighting the clock in the basement or garage, or the unspoken air of sprint superiority. Then again it’s probably because you come and find us and bug us.
But we like that. So do it again this week.
Kurt Kinetic is on the road again – this time at the Nature Valley Grand Prix, Minnesota’s biggest and best pro cycling throw down. Starting tonight, we’ll be at every stage of the race in the expo area (you can’t miss the lime green) with our latest trainers hooked up and a ton of virtual reality courses to ride while the pro’s screech by. Come and find us at any stage of the race but make sure to stop by for the Minneapolis Downtown Classic. The racing will be cool and we’re strategically set up as close to the Local Irish Pub as seemed appropriate (couldn’t get the bike and trainer through the door. We tried, of course).
So see you there: downtown St. Paul on Wednesday, Cannon Falls Thursday, Minneapolis Friday, Mankato Saturday and Stillwater on Sunday. And bring your power bar samples our way. It’s a long week; we’re going to need them.

Thursday, June 12th, 2008Kelly Benefit Strategies/Medifast Train Steams Toward Hometown Win
Wednesday, June 11th, 2008Not even 150 plus miles in brutal heat and a crash that put down three athletes, could prevent the Kelly Benefit Strategies/Medifast squad from taking the front with four miles to go in Philly yesterday. And the squad could not have picked a better time to return to top form with the entire team arriving in the Twin Cit! ies to r ace home ground at the Nature Valley Grand Prix this week.
Bajadali secured his KOM jersey at Mt. Hood this weekend after driving the in stage two, where he scored points on every KOM line other than the final ascent to the finish. He finished in 8th place overall after six days of racing, helped along the way most notably by Dan Bowman who helped to drive another long breakaway in stage four, the. The Kelly Benefit Strategies/Medifast team closed the race with three athletes in the top 20: Bajadali (8), Justin Spinelli (14) and Reid Mumford (16).
In Wilmington, Delaware, at the Bank of America Wilmington Grand Prix, Canadian David Veilleux almost won his first NRC race at the age of 20. Jonny Sundt and Veilluex rode out a 40 mile 12 man break and came close to setting up Veilluex for the win in front of title sponsor John Kelly and representatives from Kelly Benefit Strategies, one of the nation’s largest group insurance brokers and consultants.
